Our New Year 2016 adventure began with a New Years Eve dinner at the Mammoth Hotel in Yellowstone National Park and staying for two nights at the Riverside cabins in Gardiner, MT.
New Years day 1-1-2016 and the day after started very early for us as we left the cabin while it was still dark and headed into the park entering from the North Entrance. The road is open year round from Gardiner, MT across the northern tier of the park to Cooke City, MT where the road is then closed to the east for the winter months.

The weather was clear and cold with temps from 24 below zero in the morning and warming to about 5 above in mid-day. There were plenty of picture opportunities of big Bull Elk at the Black Tail Creek area and even a Bull Elk sitting along the road near the S-Curves. We witnessed a wolf, from the Junction Butte pack, chasing a cow elk which was taken down by the wolf just out of our sight. But the other members of the pack, coyote’s, ravens and eagles provided plenty of entertainment as we watched them for several hours enjoying the spoils of the hunt. We were able to take pictures and video of the wolves with an iPhone on our spotting scope with an adapter made for that purpose.
The winter wonderland in the park provided plenty of opportunities for landscape pictures, especially at Round Prairie and Soda Butt Creek and we hope that you Enjoy the Adventure!
