Rocky Mountain RV Park – Gardiner, MT -North Entrance to Yellowstone NP

Our Adventure, May 14, 2016, begins with setting up our camper at the Rocky Mountain RV Park in Gardiner, MT for a two week stay and daily trips into Yellowstone NP to view and take photo’s of the scenery and wildlife in what we call “our backyard park”.

Great view from the campground looking toward the mountains in the park.

This time of year in late spring, new wildlife critters are being born into this wonderful yet harsh environment where each day brings them a new adventure and a never ending search for food and survival from their predators.

Each day, for us, brings a new adventure as we see new born Black Bear cubs and Antelope fawns, Wolf pups, Grizzly Bear cubs and Elk Fawns along with Blue Birds, Eagles, Swans and other birds that have returned to the mountains and park for the summer months.

Near Grizzly Lake Trail there were two Grizzly sows who came out of their dens this spring with triplets, but one sow lost all three “COYS” (cub of the year) and the other sow lost two of the COYS to a boar grizzly, who killed them. It is that time of year when a boar grizzly wants to mate, but a sow is not receptive due to having the cubs, who will stay with her for two years and the sow will not mate until she kicks out the two year old cubs. The boars will then try to kill the new born cubs so that the sow will mate with him. Pictures of the sow:

Adding to our Adventure we did travel to Old Faithful and besides watching Old Faithful erupt, we got to see the “Grand Geyser” which gave a great performance for about 45 minutes. Brother Rick, who camped at Mammoth Campground, spent most days with us enjoying this wonderful Adventure.

We get to see a lot of old friends that have also been coming to the park this time of year, brother Bill Hamblin from Idaho Falls; Doug from Gardiner, MT; Rick, wolf “ranger” for the Park Service; John and Randy from Washington, and others, plus new friends that we will see on future Adventure trips. Two weeks do go by fast. Up early and heading into the park before it gets light and getting back to the camper in order to get some sleep and start over the next day. But its worth it, as we enjoy seeing all of our “Furry and Feathered Friends” as they continue their journey of life in this wonderful and exciting wilderness.
