In the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge in Central Montana is a four square mile area along the Missouri River called the Slippery Ann Elk Viewing area that is approximately 20 miles east of the nearest highway.
Each fall, hundreds of Elk congregate here providing spectacular viewing of large herds of elk that are visible around dawn and dusk, and sometimes during the the day, displaying typical behavior of the rutting season.
Bull Elk not only try and impress the Cows but the older ones do fight the young bulls who are trying their best to impress the “ladies”! The Elk are fun to watch and offer great photo opportunities. And watch out for the rattlesnakes!
